Getting started with Food Hygiene & Safety Exams
Pick your certification, run your first practice session, sit a mock exam and study in your own language: how the app works, step by step.
What Food Hygiene & Safety Exams is
Food Hygiene & Safety Exams is an iPhone and iPad app for practising food safety and food hygiene certifications in five markets: the UK, the USA, Canada (BC), Singapore and Malaysia. It has 310 original practice questions, each written against that certification's published specification or official guidance and cited to the part of it that it tests.
It is a practice and revision tool, not the real exam and not a guarantee of a pass, and it is independent: it is not affiliated with or endorsed by any awarding body, regulator or training provider.
Choose your course
After the one-time intro, tap Get started and pick the course for the certification you are taking:
- UK Level 2 Food Hygiene - choose Highfield/HABC (20 questions) or RSPH (30 questions), whichever your course provider uses.
- USA - ServSafe - ServSafe Food Handler (40 questions) or ServSafe Manager (80 questions).
- Canada (BC) - FOODSAFE Level 1 - 50 questions.
- Singapore - WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1 - 50 questions.
- Malaysia - Food Handler Training - 40 questions. This course is attendance-based, so the app treats it as a self-paced review with no pass mark.
Your first practice session
- Open the app and tap Get started.
- Tap a course. If it has two exams (UK or USA), tap the one you are sitting at the top.
- On the unit card, tap Practice.
- Tap All chapters, or choose one chapter.
- Tap an answer. You see straight away whether it was right, an explanation and the source the question was written against. Tap Next until Finish.
Questions and answer options are shuffled every session. Practice has no timer and no pass mark.
Mock exams and mixed practice
Mock Exam sits a whole unit in one go, modelled on that exam's format: a countdown clock, no feedback while it runs, and a score against the pass mark at the end, with every answer available to review. You can go back and forward and change answers, and the exam submits itself when time runs out. There is no pause, so leaving abandons that attempt. The Malaysia course has no clock and no pass mark.
Mixed practice (the button on the course list) draws questions from any courses you tick, in a set of 5 to 100. Courses you have not unlocked contribute only their free questions.
Study in your own language
Open Help (the ? icon), expand Language and choose from 21 languages shown in their own scripts, including Spanish, French, Malay, Tamil, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi, Urdu, Polish, Thai, Arabic and Welsh. The menus and all 310 questions, options and explanations change at once and the choice is remembered. The source citation under each question stays in English. Which languages the real exam is offered in depends on the exam provider, so check with them.
Progress, bookmarks and streaks
- Progress shows how many questions you have seen in each unit, your wrong answers to review, your mock exam history and your longest streak.
- Bookmarks: tap the bookmark icon on a practice question to save it.
- Review wrong answers lists every question whose latest answer was wrong; a question leaves the list when you later answer it correctly.
- Streak: finishing a practice or mixed session, or submitting a mock exam, counts for the day.
Progress is stored only on your device, so it does not move to a new phone.
What is free and what is unlocked
The app is free to download. Practice is free for the first five questions of every exam unit (the same five each time, shuffled), with explanations, sources, bookmarks, progress and streaks. Unlocking a course is a one-time purchase per certification, with no subscription. It removes the question limit and adds Mock Exam mode for every unit in that course, so the UK and USA unlocks cover both of their exams. A single bundle unlocks all five courses, and Restore purchase brings them back after a reinstall.
Offline, iPad and privacy
Every question is stored in the app, so studying works with no signal and no account. Only buying or restoring an unlock uses the App Store. It runs on iPhone and iPad (iOS 16 or later) in portrait. There is no account, analytics, advertising or server of our own, and nothing is collected.
Questions people ask
Are these the real exam questions?
No. Every question is original, written for the app against the course's published specification or official material and cited to a specific part of it. No awarding body publishes its real exam questions.
Will this get me a certificate or guarantee that I pass?
No. It is an independent study aid. It does not issue certificates, and a Pass in a mock exam only compares your score with the pass mark the app shows. Always confirm your certification's real requirements with the issuing body.
What do I get for free?
The first five questions of every exam unit in all five courses, with explanations, bookmarks, progress and streaks. Mock Exam mode and the full question bank unlock per course with a one-time purchase.
Which exam do I pick in the UK or USA course?
In the UK course pick the awarding body your course provider uses, Highfield/HABC or RSPH. In the USA course pick ServSafe Food Handler or Manager. One unlock covers both exams in each course.
Can I study in my own language and sit the exam in it?
You can switch the app and every question into any of 21 languages from Help. Which languages the real exam is offered in depends on the exam provider, so check with them.
Does it work without internet, and do I need an account?
It works fully offline once installed and needs no account. Only buying or restoring an unlock uses the App Store.
Why does the Malaysia course have no pass mark?
Malaysia's Ministry of Health Food Handler Training certificate is issued for full attendance, with no published participant pass mark, so the app treats it as a self-paced review.
What happens to my progress and purchases on a new phone?
Progress is stored only on the device, so it does not carry over. Purchases can be restored with Restore purchase on the unlock screen, using the same Apple Account.
