Honest Weather - Support
Questions, bugs or something that looks wrong - we would like to hear from you. Honest Weather is coming soon; these answers describe how the app works.
Contact us
Email support@letsgetstashd.com with the subject "Honest Weather - Support" and we will get back to you. If something looks wrong, tell us which place it was, roughly when, which iPhone or iPad you have and which version of Honest Weather you are on. In the app, Settings shows the version.
The forecast and the track record
Why does it say it is still learning?
Honest Weather saves the forecasts it fetches and later compares them with real readings near your place. Until a source has been checked on enough days, the app does not pretend to know how good it is: every source counts equally and no accuracy figure is shown. It builds up over days, and a new place starts again from the beginning.
Why is my forecast different from another weather app?
Other apps usually show one source's numbers. This one blends several and shows each source's own line beside the conclusion, so you can see where they agree and where they do not. Two apps showing different numbers for the same hour is normal; the graph shows you why.
What does the shaded range mean?
It is the range the app expects the weather to land in. Where the app has not yet checked that range against real outcomes near you, it says so instead of calling it a confidence interval. A wider range means less certainty, not a worse app.
What do unlikely, possible, probably and likely mean?
Each word covers a fixed band of rain chance, and the same words are used in the app, the widgets and the alerts. The app always shows the dry chance as well as the rain chance, because 30 percent rain also means 70 percent dry.
What does the change log show?
It lists when the forecast moved since an earlier one, for example rain now starting an hour earlier than it did this morning, with the times. Very small changes are left out so the list shows what matters.
Radar
Why does my place show a rain map that says it is a model, not radar?
Radar is shown only from national weather services whose data we are licensed to use: the United States, Germany and Canada. Elsewhere the app shows a rain map from forecast models and labels it as a model, never as radar.
The radar looks empty.
If no rain is falling in the area on screen, there is nothing to draw. Move the map to a wetter place, or use the time slider to look at an earlier time.
Location, places and data
Do I have to share my location?
No. You can add places by name instead and the app works the same way. If you do allow location, it is read only while the app is open, never in the background. You can change the permission at any time in iOS Settings.
Where does the data come from?
Forecasts come from Open-Meteo and MET Norway. Observations used to check them come from NOAA and, in England, the Environment Agency. Radar comes from NOAA, Deutscher Wetterdienst and Environment and Climate Change Canada. The full list, with licences, is in the app under Settings, Data sources.
How do I delete my data?
Everything the app stores is on your device, so deleting the app deletes it. You can remove a place at any time in the app. We hold nothing about you on a server.
Alerts and widgets
How do I switch rain alerts on or off?
Rain alerts are off until you switch them on in the app's Settings, and iOS asks your permission the first time. They are scheduled on your phone itself; there is no account or server behind them. To stop them, switch them off in the app or in iOS Settings.
How do I add a widget?
Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose Honest Weather. For the Lock Screen, touch and hold it, choose Customise, and add the widget there.
Privacy
Does Honest Weather track me?
No. There is no account, no advertising and no analytics. The app never asks to follow you across other apps or websites. See the Honest Weather privacy policy for the detail.
Which version do I have?
Open Honest Weather and go to Settings: the version is shown at the bottom. Honest Weather is for iPhone and iPad.
